Hello, fellow opera fanatics! : ) I will be your generous provider of fanfics for Billy Budd, Pearl Fishers, The Magic Flute, The Barber of Seville, and many more! Once I...write them... I started writing a Barber sequel, completely ignoring The Marriage of Figaro. That sequel may still eventually happen. Magic Flute: Papageno/Papagena fluff. I must write it sometime. I have a fic finished for Billy Budd, so I'll post that sometime soon. I've another Billy fic in the works as well. At the moment, I'm working obsessively on a Pearl Fishers fic, set immediately after the end of the opera, so yes, it focuses on Zurga-death. I also want to write some little vignettes or something about Nadir and Zurga as teenagers, just palling around, you know. Somehow, cliff-diving came to mind. XD
What do you think of modern re-workings and interpretations of opera?
(Like: Rent, Miss Saigon, and Carmen Jones; or last year's staging of Semele at NYCO where Semele was Marilyn Monroe, Jove was JFK and Juno was Jackie.)
I think that this sort of thing can really be very interesting, and show how the stories from operas that are hundreds of years old can still be relevant today. (After all, there's all this modern Shakespeare, too.) Also, while I don't actually like Rent or Miss Saigon, they might encourage people to see the original work.
What do you think is necessary to have a "good" modern reworking? What else do you think needs one?
(I'm in the process of planning a modern Tosca, if I can work out the logistics of it. I want it really badly. It works so well, in theory, with Guantanamo.)
Aida is so full of jingoism, it must have some modern application.
